EuroPCR celebrates the opening ceremony in the presence of
H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco

The prestigious international cardiology course, taking place from 13th to 16th May, expects over 11,000 attendees from more than 100 countries.

Barcelona, 8th May 2008 - EuroPCR, the International cardiology course, will celebrate the opening ceremony of its 18th edition on the 13th May 2008 in the Barcelona International Convention Centre.

The official opening of this prestigious event will be presided by the EuroPCR director and founder Professor Jean Marco along with other Board members and will be conducted in the presence of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco.

His Serene Highness is attending the event in support of a programme that EuroPCR, in collaboration with the European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (EAPCI) and the Government of Monaco, will launch to educate and train medical teams (medical, para-medical, administrative, financial, health providers...) in selected sub-Saharan countries. The programme's aim is to develop local interventional cardiology units that will help reduce the burden of cardio-vascular disease in both adult and children.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality worldwide, accounting for 17.5 million deaths annually. Eighty per cent of these deaths and 87% of related disabilities occur in low and middle-income countries, many of which are faced with a double burden of disease - infectious and cardiovascular diseases. Africa, in particular, is in urgent need of medical education, administrative support and management skills.

Actions such as the Cardiovascular Education in Sub-Saharan Africa Project correspond to the EuroPCR philosophy - to educate, to inform and to share and the Course directors are delighted to welcome H.S.H. to this year's opening ceremony.
