Cardiovascular Surgery, Cardiology Department, Phneumologhy Department and Thorax Surgery constitute the Thorax Institute of the Hospital Clinic which, in turn, is part of the Clinic Corporation. The latter includes the Hospital Clinic, The Maternity Hospital and the San Juan de Dios Hospital, the paediatric centre. The Thorax Institute is a 142 beds facility served by a total of 80 specialists, and 251 nurses.

The Department of Cardiology has an international reputation in different fields, including Acute Coronary Care, Electrophysiology and Arrhythmias, Clinical Echocardiography, Interventional Cardiology, Clinical Cardiology, and ExperimentalCardiology. Current research interests are coronary imaging, novel technologies for plaque detection, myocardial regeneration and arterial wall biology. All together there are three areas in the Cardiovascular Department: Adult Cardiac Surgery,Vascular Surgery And Paediatric Cardiac Surgery.

As a whole, this Department has the highest volume load of cardiac interventions in Spain, including close to 700 open heart procedures in adults, more than 120 in children and about 1000 Interventions in vascular surgery with an important program of endovascular accesses. There are four main lines of interest in adult surgery: heart valve repair, surgery of the aorta, surgery of atrial fibrillation and heart transplantation.

The Hemodynamic and Interventional Cardiology Unit was created in 1974. Acute myocardial infarction has always been a line of the greatest interest for us in our hospital. We have participated in our own and international trials of great importance for Cardiology, related with the evaluation of thrombolitic drugs and interventionism in the context STEMI since our early days. Our area of interest is also directed to the treatment of complex patients and lesions, septal ablation and mitral valvuloplasty. We have taken part in several trials like ARTS I and ARTS II , FINESSE, ACUITY, SYNTAX, EARLY-ACS, CHAMPION-PCI, RE-FINE, PLATO, APEX-AMI, APPROACH, FREEDOM, CURRENT. More than 100 publications have been produced in important journals.
Since 1988 our unit has been open 24 hours a day, 365 days per year in order to treat patients with acute coronary syndromes including STEMI.
Two catheterization laboratories for invasive and interventional cardiology, both intallations are Siemens, one is Axiom Artis dTA and the other is a Coroscop. We attend our own patients and patients referred from district hospitals.
Since 2001 we have performed almost 4000 catheterisms of which more than 1100 are interventional procedures. In 2007 we performed 190 procedures in patients with STEMI within the first 12 hours of symptom onset.
Our department is one of the authorized centers for education and training of Spanish and international specialists for hemodynamic and interventional procedures who spend one or two years with us
