The
Universität Leipzig – Herzzentrum is one of the best equipped
centers for treatment of cardio-circulatory diseases in Germany. It was
officially opened in September 1994 and is classed as a “maximum care” facility
within the category of specialist hospitals. The hospital is committed to
preserving the university's century-long tradition in the field of medicine,
consistently and responsibly. The holders of chairs within the medical faculty
for the specialist disciplines of cardiac surgery, cardiology and paediatric
cardiology work and research at the Herzzentrum. The model of a privately funded
and operated university hospital is increasingly attracting attention, as it
demonstrates that cost-efficient working practices and world-class research and
education do not contradict each other. About 900 dedicated staff work under
the direction of a team of internationally experienced medical professionals and
renowned scientists. Three clinics – the clinic for cardiac surgery, the clinic
for internal medicine/cardiology and the clinic for paediatric cardiology are
located in the Herzzentrum Leipzig caring for over 17000 patients anually on an
in-patient basis.

The
clinic for heart surgery covers the entire spectrum of adult
and paediatric cardiac surgery. Besides bypass and heart valve operations and
the entire range of paediatric cardiac surgery, the scope of services includes a
heart transplantation programme, the treatment of combined cardiac and vascular
diseases and surgery of the major vessels. Innovative technologies and surgical
concepts (e.g. robot-assisted operations (see photo) and surgical interventions
using telemanipulators) are currently being developed and piloted. In the field
of minimally invasive cardiac surgery, Herzzentrum Leipzig is already one of the
leading centres.
The clinic for internal medicine/cardiology
specialises in the diagnosis and therapy of patients suffering from
coronary heart diseases, cardiac valvular defects, cardiac arrhythmias and
myocardial insufficiency. The clinic's main focus is on invasive diagnostics,
the use of interventional techniques and secondary care for emergency cases. The
clinic also features specialised departments for electrophysiology and
interventional angiology.
The department for
rhythmology/electrophysiology offers the entire spectrum of
diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients with cardiac arrhythmias and is
one of the largest institutions in europe.

The department of Clinical and Interventional Angiology was founded at the Haert Center of Leipzig in January 2002. Under the direction of PD Dr. Dierk Scheinert it has since then grown to one of the largest interventional angiologic departments in europe. In 2007 over 2500 periperhal interventions on iliac, femoropopliteal, infrapopliteal, renal as well as supraaortic arteries were performed. Special interest is focused on the treatment of critical ischemia in diabetic patients with interventional treatment of diffusely and extensively diseased infrapopliteal arteries as well as on the treatment of aneurysms and dissections of the descendent thoracic and abdominal aorta and many other fields. In cooperation with the clinic for cardiovascular surgery of the Herzzentrum and the clinic for vascular surgery of the Parkkrankenhaus under the direction of Dr. Peter Dahl, MD (an associated hospital) a high number of these patients are treated interventionally by implantation of stent-grafts. Another major clinical and scientific focus is the treatment of patients with supraaortic obstructions. Education and training is offered to specialists for peripheral interventions during the whole year. An extensive research program is focused on different issues of current intrest like drug eluting stents in peripheral arteries, prevention and treatment of restenoses in peripheral arteries, carotid stenting etc.
