About Instituto Dante Pazzanese

Founded in 1954, Instituto Dante Pazzanese de Cardiologia has become a reference for cardiovascular treatment in the public health system in Brazil. The hospital is located in São Paulo, the highest populated city in South America, and rests in an area of 14.443,32 m².

The international reputation of our center relies not only on its high volume of patients assisted yearly, but also in the scientific field, with the introduction of new techniques for cardiac surgery (e.g. Jatene’s surgery or switch surgery for correction of great vessels transposition, left ventricle geometric reconstruction for the treatment of terminal heart failure, etc) and new devices in the fields of electrophysiology, rhythmology and interventional cardiology.

Instituto Dante Pazzanese facilities include:

- 318 beds
- 152 beds for general cardiology and cardiac surgery
- Cardiac Surgery: 8 operating rooms
- Interventional cardiology: 6 cath-labs
- 73 beds for intensive coronary care unit and immediate post-cardiovascular surgery care.

Volume of procedures performed in the Interventional Cardiology Department in 2007:

- Coronary diagnostic procedures: 5,841
- Percutaneous Coronary Interventions: 1,686

- Aortic and mitral valvuloplasty: 47

Equipped with 6 cath-labs, the interventional cardiology department is opened 24 hours and operates with 23 physicians, 49 nurses and technicians and 20 day-hospital beds. Furthermore, we have taken the leading position worldwide in conducting First-In-Man (FIM) studies, including the pioneering work with Sirolimus-eluting stents and several other novel devices for percutaneous treatment of coronary artery disease. Currently, there are 22 ongoing studies in our department. Our physicians have participated as guest lecturers and session chairmen in important congress and scientific sessions (ACC, SOLACI, TCT, EuroPCR, etc.).

The department has its own research infrastructure with angiographic, intravascular ultrasound, Virtual Histology™ and optical coherence tomography (OCT) core-labs, two clinical research monitors and 18 fellows (5 international) in training.
