Specific softwares allow you to “subscribe” to the Podcast: they check whether a new Podcast content is available and automatically download it onto the computer or the portable media player connected to the computer.

... just add the podcast feed as seen below, and it will automatically download new content, for FREE. (In iTunes, choose "Subscribe to Podcast" from the Advanced menu, and paste the url feed)
