EUROPCR – Stent for Life Initiative (SFL)
  Wednesday 20th May: 7:30

Barcelona, Spain 20th May: The "Stent for Life" Initiative (SFL Initiative) has been launched by the coalition of European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (EAPCI) and EuroPCR. The partnering organisations are EUCOMED, ESC Working Group on Acute Cardiac Care and National Cardiology Societies and/or National Working Groups for Interventional Cardiology (WGIC).

Stent for Life mission statement: The SFL Initiative′s mission is to improve the delivery and patient access to the life saving indications of PCI thereby reducing the mortality and morbidity of patients suffering from acute coronary syndromes.

For patients presenting with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), and other forms of acute coronary artery disease, timely PCI can be life saving, reducing reinfarction rates as well as stroke. Timely revascularisation with PCI is therefore recommended by ESC and other international Guidelines. A survey of all 51 ESC countries was made to obtain an up-to-date, realistic picture of how patients with AMI are treated in Europe. Countries using primary PCI in only a minority of AMI patients were identified and three targets set:
  • To increase use of primary PCI to greater than 75% of STEMI patients,
  • To achieve primary PCI rates of more than 600 per one million inhabitants per year,
  • To offer 24/7 service for primary PCI procedures at existing invasive facilities.
Best practice examples will serve as a source of inspiration, as relevant to specific environments and health care systems. SFL Initiative’s Steering Committee is led by Prof. Petr Widimsky and Dr Jean Fajadet and is supporting the launch of National SFL Task Forces in Bulgaria, France, Greece, Serbia, Spain and Turkey.
In addition, a Call for Action will be launched during EuroPCR, inviting all groups to endorse the goals and objectives of the initiative, in the best interest of patient well being.
Dr Zuzana Kaifoszova, SFL Project Manager says: ′For a variety of reasons we do not always reach our patients on time. Timely intervention can be critical to outcomes in patients with acute myocardial infarction. Stent for Life aims to ensure that these patients receive the right treatment at the right time, without delay. To do this we need new logistical approaches to patient management, this is what Stent for Life will work to achieve across Europe.′
